SUMMER 2010 Issue

Ed interviewed me about Fiona's Script :-)
The film and TV actress talks about "pay it forward" filmmaking and the zen of life-long learning.

Named after a famous school of acting, The Method Fest is the only major film festival in the U.S. focusing on acting, celebrating breakout acting performances in story driven independent films. The Method Fest takes great pride in being a discovery festival, looking to help launch the works of young fresh filmmakers and to discover breakthrough performances by young, bold new actors. The festival has also taken great delight in sharing career-defining performances of established performers and in showcasing a few chosen well-known directors to screen at the festival. The 11 th annual Method Fest screened 33 feature films and 62 shorts from U.S. and international filmmakers from March 26 – April 2.
SAN FRANCISCO — Giovannie Espiritu lit and led the way. A longtime member of the Screen Actors Guild who has played roles on the longest running television series “ER” and the new hit “Bones,” Espiritu shared her story of triumph over domestic violence at a Philippine consulate gathering in October 2005. Until she got on the podium and spoke of her nightmare of a relationship with her abusive ex-husband, Filipinos often only heard or read about domestic violence in their community on the news after a fatal incidence. Or behind closed doors. In whispers.
SAN MATEO, CA. — Giovannie Espiritu’s name tells her tale of transformation. “Gio,” as friends and fans know the actress who has appeared in the durable television drama E.R. and the critically acclaimed thriller Bones, no longer goes by her husband’s surname. “I am making a new change in my life,” she spoke of the phoenix on her back at a recent seminar on building healthier family relationships at St. Timothy Catholic Church in San Mateo. The tattoo is an inscription from 1 John 4:18 to “remind me that love is not based on fear or intimidation. I am learning that I am worth treating with respect, to be who I was born to be: Giovannie (for John, beloved of God) Espiritu (filled with Spirit). “
Asiance recently sat down with Giovannie at the Que Tal Cafe in San Francisco to find out what's up? And in a bare-all interview, she strips off her girl next door image and reveals the "magic" of acting, what "sells" in Hollywood and what it's like being a young mother.
"...a standout in the supporting cast...[Giovannie Espiritu] has that innate gifted actor’s sense of reality that doesn’t draw attention to itself."
"What can I say about Giovannie? She's truly amazing, as soon as the Camera starts rolling she captivates everyone on set. Not only is she an extremely talented actor, but I was constantly impressed by her ability to consistantly give performances that gave me chills, each take subtly exploring different nuances in her character. From her first reading of the script she immediately had an understanding of the character and was able to transform herself into her with very little direction. She has an instinct for what's beyond the words on the page; that's something that's very hard to teach. And in spite of all this incredible talent, she one of the most down to earth, and frankly likeable, people I've ever worked with. A pleasure- no a privilege- to work with; I don't know how we ever made movies without her."
"Giovannie is one of the most giving and prepared actresses I've worked with. Always focused on character, she brought a wealth of collaboration to my experience with her on American Yearbook. Her dedication to her craft actually brought the caliber of acting even higher on my set, as she set the bar for the other actors by her emotional commitment. I'm looking forward to casting her again... She's the 'it' in 'The Shit' "
